BEWARE OF ISOÕS (Instrument Shaped Objects)

Dear Parents:

As the band director for your child next year, I feel it is important to bring your attention to the problem of ÒI.S.O.ÕsÓ (INSTRUMENT SHAPED OBJECTS).   In my opinion, the instruments being sold by non-music dealer outlets may have a dramatically negative impact on the ability of your players to succeed in music.   These instruments come from Asian countries where labor is cheap and the instruments are poorly made.   They have yet to develop the technology or even the basic materials with enough quality to make them worthy of your consideration.   They bend or break easily and repair parts are not readily available.

I completely understand that in todayÕs economy we all need to get a best we can in quality and price for our investment, but the problem with musical instruments is that they all seem to look alike regardless of price.  A flute for $250.00 may look just like a flute for $750.00.   However, purchasing the cheaper one is a case of false economy.  The sayings ÒIf it looks to good to be true, it isÓ and ÒYou get what you pay forÓ  are true!  You know why there are price differences between cheap cars and cars of better quality.   The same concept applies to musical instruments.

Some parents are concerned that their child may not stick with band, so they seek out the instrument with the lowest upfront cost.   This concern is what can make the ÒI.S.O.ÕsÓ cheap cost look so appealing.   Unfortunately the purchase of the ÒI.S.O.Ó may well contribute to your child indeed doing just what you fear.   If they are playing an instrument that is constantly out of tune or adjustment through no fault of their own, they may think that the problem is them.   This may then lead to their losing interest, giving up, and missing out on all the benefits of being in band.

You could, instead, rent a quality instrument for a few months as a trial period from a reputable music store.   Most band teachers recommend this approach.   As an added bonus, you will build up equity toward the purchase of an instrument should your child be one of the many who will stick with it and thrive!

I look forward to the long term involvement and enjoyment of participation for your child.   If you would like my recommendation about what are quality brands and where you can get them, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Sincerely,
